Sci-Fi
Science Fiction Science fiction can transport readers to worlds light-years away or deep within unseen dimensions. It can extrapolate the smallest scientific fact into alternate realities teeming with alien races and fantastic technology. Bending the laws of time and space, science fiction lets us wonder what might be, opening the door to any possibility.

To write great science fiction, you must splice together the skills of a fiction writer and a talent for imagining new realities. In our courses, you will learn about transforming the real into the fantastic, as well as such fiction craft elements as character, plot, point of view, description, dialogue, setting, voice, and theme. You will also learn how and where to market your work.

Whether you seek to write short stories or novels, hard-core or fantastic, we’ll show you how to write stories that overwhelm with wonder.

Master Class
Science Fiction Writing | 10-week Workshop

The Science Fiction Writing Master Class provides students deeply immersed in the writing of an SF novel or short story with the opportunity to work with a published novelist and other dedicated writers in a small class setting. The class is devoted almost exclusively to workshopping — the reading, critiquing, and discussion of student novels. Every student will be allowed to workshop approximately 150 pages of a novel. Students may also work on short stories, but may only submit one story at a time. Class size is limited to six students, all of whom have done a substantial amount of work on a SF novel and are experienced in the workshop process.

Instructor: Marta Randall has published numerous science fiction novels, including Islands (Pyramid Publications), which was nominated for a Nebula award, Journey (Pocket Books), Dangerous Games (Pocket Books), The Sword of Winter (Timescape Books), and Growing Light (St. Martin's Press, under the name Martha Conley).  Her short fiction has appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies.  She has edited for New Dimensions and Nebula Awards 19.  She served one term as vice-president and two terms as president of the Science Fiction Writers of America.

Prerequisites: The following are prerequisites for students who take the Science Fiction Writing Master Class:
  • A complete (or nearly complete) draft of a SF novel or short story
  • Completion of one or more terms of Gotham’s Science Fiction II, Novel II, or Fiction II courses
  • Acceptance by Gotham based on a sample of the student’s work

To be accepted into the Science Fiction Writing Master Class all students must first submit a sample of their work.

Your writing sample may be no more than ten pages. Ideally, the sample will be the first ten pages of the novel you plan to workshop in the Science Fiction Writing Master Class. If that material is not yet available, you may submit ten pages from another work of your own science fiction. If your work is a short story, you may only submit one story at a time.

A Note on the Class: All students in this class will be expected to read and critique segments of one hundred pages or more per week. The success of the class depends on the full participation of all students. Students should only take this course if they are confident they can handle the weekly load of reading and critiquing. To make this more manageable, students should have already done most or all of the work on the novel that they plan to present to the class before class begins.

A Note to Applicants: The Master Classes may get far more applicants than can be accepted, and so talented and dedicated students are often not accepted. If you are not accepted in a Master Class, you are welcome to apply another time, and you may well be accepted then.
