Children’s fiction has evolved into a rich landscape of increasingly complex topics, with narrators who truly inhabit the interior life of young people. This course will take a deep-dive into the characteristics of contemporary children's literature, with specific focus on middle grade (ages 8-12) and young adult (12+) novels. Students will explore craft through the lens of MG and YA fiction and learn how to master elements of writing like character development, voice, and theme and the special roles they play in MG and YA storytelling. MG and YA are a unique segments of the publishing industry; participants will gain a greater understanding of what sets them apart, including their particular joys and challenges. Interactive participation is encouraged, and writing prompts will be assigned throughout. Ideal for MG and YA writers of all levels.
