INT. SALEM HOUSE - GAMMA'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Mar approaches his elderly and practically blind GREAT GRANDMOTHER, GERTRUDE GUSCHWALD (101), sitting in her wheelchair. Frail, translucent pale skin, wispy white hair.
Suzie's twin brother, SEBASTIAN (BASTIAN) PETRUSO (18) reads to their great grandmother. Bastian wears black nail polish, black clothes, many rings and a nose ring.
Mar puts his younger brother, Bastian, in a headlock.
BASTIAN
Knock it off.
DWAYNE
(via webcam chat)
Just 'cause you're back living at
home, Mar, doesn't mean you're back
in high school.
KENDRA
(via webcam chat)
Did I mention I've made peace with
my decision to break up with Mar
back in our college days?
Bastian escapes from Mar's noogies and realizes Great Grandmother had been sleeping.
Great Grandmother slumps in her wheel chair, head tilted down, eyes shut.
BASTIAN
Gamma, you fell asleep. Time to wake up. Gamma?
Great Grandmother doesn't budge. Panicking that something might be wrong, Bastian gently shakes her.
Great Grandmother STARTLES awake as she GASPS for air. The nearly blind elderly woman reaches out her frail, shaky hand.
GREAT GRANDMOTHER
(frantic)
Where's the creative child?
MAR
(mocking)
It's me, Gamma. The creative one.
BASTIAN
Stop messing with her, Mar.
BASTIAN (CONT'D)
(to Great Grandmother)
I'm here. What do you need, Gamma?
MAR
Gamma, please tell us the story of the cursed trunk.
GREAT GRANDMOTHER
It's very important that I tell you about the cursed trunk.
MAR
Oh goody, Gamma.
BASTIAN
Mar is just playing a bad joke on you, Gamma. You've told us about
the trunk many, many times.
GREAT GRANDMOTHER
It's dreadfully important that you know about this.
BASTIAN
Okay. You can tell us again, if it makes you feel better, Gamma.
GREAT GRANDMOTHER
Yes, that'll do. Right here, in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1693, my
Great, Great, Great, Great Grandmother
was killed for practicing witchcraft.
They called her... Watcha...
BASTIAN
They called her Granny.
GREAT GRANDMOTHER
And they accused Granny of... They said she... What was...
BASTIAN
They accused her of being a witch after she burned the unborn baby in
the womb of a pregnant women.
GREAT GRANDMOTHER
Precisely. Chanting in tongues. And when the townsfolk came to drown
her, our Granny locked everything in
a trunk and made her children promise
to guard it. The trunk contains a
powerful evil that must never escape.
2.
GREAT GRANDMOTHER (CONT'D)
And now that cursed trunk is... It's been kept in the... up in the...
BASTIAN
It's in our attic and we are never to touch it. Ever. Right, Gamma?
GREAT GRANDMOTHER
Some of the psychiatrists in our family think our Granny simply went
mad from being a 1690s mid-wife who
witnessed so many babies die. But
they're just twits who don't know
their ass from their elbow.
BASTIAN
(chuckling)
Okay, Gamma. I know. I know.
Do you feel better now?
GREAT GRANDMOTHER
Listen, child. It's going to be your responsibility. Guard it.
Don't let it out. "The End of Days"
will come. You must promise me,
Bastian.
BASTIAN
I promise, Gamma. Always.
Great Grandmother settles down.
MAR
Crazy little Bastian actually believes this crap.
BASTIAN
We're going to let you rest, Gamma.
BASTIAN
What is your problem? Do you realize...
MAR
(to his cyber friends)
Now you can all see my family is dealing with that crazy old bat and
3.
MAR (CONT'D)
her boy wonder here. They just won't quit. We come from a long line of
crazies.
BASTIAN
Just 'cause you don't get it, doesn't make us the crazy ones. A little
help here, Suzie.
SUZIE
You and Gamma are kind of the family freaks.
BASTIAN
Screw you both.
MAR
Watch the back talk, bro. Or I'll sneak some crushed pills into your
cereal.
BASTIAN
(gathering drawings)
Tell Mom that I went to Comic World.
