"Besides the beguiling story, the affable illustrations of the smiling Gloria, the accidental mayhem in the background, and the myriad safety tips -- such as 'always pull the toothpick out of your sandwhich' and 'never lick a stop sign in the winter' -- add to the enjoyment. A glorious picture book." -- The Horn Book "Rathmann is a quick rising star in the world of chidren's books. A darling story. Officer Buckle gives boring ol’ safety tips and puts everyone to sleep until one day he gets a dog and the dog is very entertaining and his career takes off. Only problem is he doesn’t know that everyone is excited about the dog. It’s a sweet and simple story that works out well in the end.

I really can’t understand what about the art in this book makes this the Caldecott winner. It’s a fun and whimsical story, but the artwork is nothing we haven’t seen before. I don’t understand this choice. Mercer Mayer has better artwork or Berenstain Bears, so why aren’t they nominated? I don’t get it.

Well, the children loved the story. The nephew thought this was a great story. He loved the dog doing tricks on stage. He laughed and giggled. He asked why our dog Cooper couldn’t do those things. I told him, “because you are constantly pinching Cooper so he doesn’t want to do those things.” it’s a thing in our house. He is treating the dog better. He gave this 4 stars. The niece was laughing too. She enjoyed the story and she gave this 3 stars.

This is one of those books that you might have to get through the first few pages before you really start to enjoy the story. I honestly expected a boring tale, but this was cute and made me chuckle to myself a few times. I loved Gloria--what a sweet pup! Everything becomes better with a dog in tow, including this. The art was nice and colorful, and I especially loved the expressions. I don't understand why it won a Caldecott though; to each their own I guess. I recommend this for ages 6 through 12.

Officer Buckle has a lot of safety tips for the kids and when he shared his tips, no body paid any attention to him. Then he gets a police dog named Gloria and he takes Gloria with him for the safety speech and all the kids not only pay attention to the speech, they end up enjoying it and cheering afterwards. Officer Buckle and Gloria are requested to give safety speeches from a lot of other places and they become really popular and accidents stop happening as well.

It is a cute story with good pictures and I loved the addition of Gloria doing her own thing whilst Officer Buckle was giving safety speech. Of course I loved the message too.

Entertaining and delightfully humorous, Peggy Rathmann's Officer Buckle and Gloria basically and deftly, cleverly combines an often funny series of anecdotal snippets (particularly of canine Gloria repeatedly and uproariously upstaging staid and serious Officer Buckle) with important personal safety considerations and the always essential messages of friendship, of sticking with one's buddy through thick and thin. The already massively comical and witty narrative is accompanied (is graced) by bright, lively and equally engaging, hilarious illustrations, which although a bit too cartoon-like for my personal taste, do well complementing the text, the printed words, often actually quite surpassing and expanding the latter's details and recounted information (especially Gloria's antics when she mimics, when she acts out Officer Buckle's safety concerns are ONLY shown in the illustrations, are at best merely hinted at in and by the text). Recommended, especially since so many recent picture books seem to often be primarily issue and problem heavy, and sometimes, even with the importance of necessary didactic considerations, fun and humour are required, are sorely needed for children and by children (and that even with educational demands, didactic information can be incorporated and perhaps even should be incorporated with humour and fun, in delightful and laugh-out-loud dosages, as has been brilliantly achieved and demonstrated with and by Officer Buckle and Gloria).

"Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah" is what it sounds like to children when we're trying to teach them the simple rules of life. They are important lessons to live by, but how do we convey them to our kids without sounding like the voice on the phone in all Peanuts movies? We could wait until they knock themselves almost unconscious to remind them not to lean back in their chairs, or we could read them Peggy Rathmann's book, Officer Buckle and Gloria. Giving them simple reminders like "Never stand on a swivel chair," and "Always wipe up spills BEFORE someone SLIPS and FALLS!" are absolutely hilarious in this brightly colored, visually funny book!

The opening bright yellow pages with stars showing Gloria acting out her simple messages for staying safe are incredibly funny. The title page shows a sad little police officer sitting at his desk, alone, writing down safety tips. Some of his safety tips are inspired by his own recklessness, and that makes the reader more aware of them. Throughout the book there are safety tip violations that children can seek and point out as they are reading the book. Officer Buckle bores his audiences to sleep and the children listing to his safety tip assemblies, are not paying attention to him.

One day Office Buckle gets a new partner -- a dog named Gloria. At first Gloria looks like any other dog, but she quickly proves herself to be quite an entertainer. As she is acting out -- behind Officer Buckle's back -- the safety tips he is reciting, the audience of children sit up to listen and soon are laughing uproariously. Every time Officer Buckle turns to look at his partner, she is sitting obediently behind him. Soon Officer Buckle and Gloria are in high demand, and a television crew comes to film them. It is at that point that Officer Buckle sees his act and is convinced that the audiences prefer Gloria to him, so he quits. Their act flounders when Gloria goes to schools by herself and can't entertain the children on her own.

Interwoven into all the safety tips is a beautiful story about friendship, and what it means to work together. Rathmann is very creative in her drawings, using every inch of her pictures to convey a message. I especially love the bright colors and the drawings of the characters. Children will love this story and will most likely hear and remember at least some of the safety tips. What could be better than that?

Officer Buckle is boring students everyday with his safety talks. Students and teachers are sleeping in the auditorium, and they are not paying attention. Then one day, Officer Buckle gets a partner name Gloria. Gloria is a scruffy looking dog, but looks deceive. She is smart as a whip and very silly. While Officer Buckle is up before the audience, Gloria is play acting whatever Safety Tip is being described. Suddenly the children are sitting in their seats, laughing and enjoying the show. Of course Officer Buckle has no idea what his side-kick is doing behind him, and he thinks people are happy to hear his Safety Tip instructions. That is until a news camera comes to film them, and as he's watching on TV that night, he sees Gloria's antics behind him. Officer Buckle decides that he's not needed in this act, so he bows out and Gloria begins to go to the school assemblies by herself, much to the dismay of the students.

The text and pictures in this book are hilarious. Very cartoon-like, they are colorful and full of subtle detail that will engage all students. The expressions on Officer Buckle's and Gloria's faces are priceless. I highly recommend this book if you want a good laugh!

Funny, charming and wise. I love picture books like this, where the illustrations really help to tell the story (rather than simply provide a visual of what the text has described). Gloria is so adorable! Love, love, love all the illustrations. Love all the safety rules and haven't even read all of Officer Buckle's post-it-notes yet as my son asked for an immediate reread and then his imagination whisked us off to other things. Love the little details (the banana peel emblem, haha!) Love the final safety tip! I'm thinking of adding it to our permanent collection.

A Caldecott award winner that I wasn't that impressed with. The pictures must have won because of the dog's tricks but overall I've seen so much better illustrations. The story was cute, but only kept my 5 yr old somewhat interested. My preschoolers were completely bored even though I continually tried to pull them in with stuff about the dog, it just didn't help. Not one we'll be reading again.

Officer Buckle is a passionate advocate for safety and for following rules. The problem is that his presentations can lack pizzazz. That is until one day he's paired up with a smart pooch called Gloria and then things really take off. This book is a wonderful read aloud for older kids who have a longer attention span and the book's takeaway will resonate with an older age group as well.

This book is cute, and while the illustrations aren't stellar, the storyline carries the tale.

Officer Buckle has the task of giving presentations regarding safety to various schools. Bored, the students rarely pay attention. One day, Officer Buckle brings a dog named Gloria with him. While he is giving his talk, Gloria is in the background going through the motions of what he is saying.

Suddenly, the students look up and listen. Alone, Officer Buckle's presentation was non inspiring, but with Gloria the children laugh and listen.

This is about a police officer whose dog helps him give safety tip talks to students. It is cute, but not amazing. I am surprised it won the Caldecott medal. It must have been a slow year for picture books... Although I will say that this is probably one of the most child-friendly and "normal" of the Caldecotts that I've read!

One of my nephews, the one who liked to make up safety rules, would have wanted this book on his shelves. (He liked to invent jokes and make rules that sounded silly but were reasonable, such as "Never share your lunch with a bear.")

I like anything that raises kids' awareness of safety, AND provides an opportunity to consider some of the reasons for rules.

Poor Officer Buckle. I feel his pain whenever I get up in front of a story time group and notice that no one is paying attention. I think kids understand that feeling too - the fear that no one is listening to the important things they have to say. Gloria is a wonderful asset to the performance, but even her exciting jumps and flips create a problem. Officer Buckle realizes it’s not him but Gloria who is so popular. Thankfully, though, the students at the schools recognize it’s the partnership that works, not Officer Buckle on his own, or Gloria on her own, and everyone comes out feeling important . I love kids’ books with adult main characters, because they show that all people, regardless of age, face challenges, and it they help kids see the adults in their lives as real people, not just authority figures, or folks doing a job. This book is great for demonstrating empathy, and also reinforcing good listening skills.

I can't believe I'd never read this book!
This is such a cute story.
It tells of the very safety Conscious Officer Buckle, who begins to bring Gloria (a K9 dog) to his safety seminars at school and safety suddenly becomes a hit, but Buckle doesn't know quite why the change; Gloria boosts Buckles' confidence in not only the many students but in Buckle himself. Good and funny story of friendship.
Good read aloud for storytime and colorful illustrations;
Thanks for the recommendation Darla!

4* art
3* story

It's a funny one. Squirt didn't get it at first because he was jumping on the bed instead of looking at the pictures. It's hard to tell if he's listening sometimes, but he gets very upset if I stop reading...

Caldecott Winner 1996
Very funny book about how Officer Buckle's safety lessons at local schools were boring, until he brought Gloria, his police dog. Gloria gets everyone's attention by acting out silly antics of emphasis per the presentation behind Officer Buckle (who was unaware of his funny dog).
I can definitely see a kid saying "Again!" to this book.

Rathmann, P. (1995). Officer Buckle and Gloria. New York: Putnam's.

Officer Buckle is a clumsy police officer who puts together safety tips and presents them to the local schools. The presentations are boing and the kids and staff usually ignore the tips. Then, the police station got a new police dog Gloria, who accompanied Officer Buckle to the Safety Talks. She was a hit because she would act out the safety tip behind Officer Buckles back and he didn’t know. The town became more safe and he was getting calls from everywhere to invite him to present his safety tips! Little did he know, Gloria was the real star! Soon, Officer Buckle found out, and he was sad that people were only calling him because of Gloria’s interpretations of his safety tips. He quit doing the shows and then Gloria was sad! Officer Buckle had a little fan who wrote a letter and reunited Officer Buckle and Gloria. Did they continue their safety lessons, or give up the spotlight for good?

This 1996 Caldecott Medal winner has amazing illustrations. Gloria is a crack up! The story does not use words to tell you that the police dog is acting out Officer Buckles safety tips, it shows you in the illustrations. The illustrations have bright water color, that does not stick to a solid picture, but sometimes hang off the picture such as the little girls lunch pail with yogurt falling into the word area during one of Officers Buckles boring lectures, or the swivel chair that has sped off to the next page when Officer Buckle fell while pinning safety tips. The pictures can leap off the page, or dangle, which works well for this story. The story has a mostly white boarder, except when the characters and illustrations are flinging off the pages. The font is a very plain font, one used in common papers and that makes it easier to read. There is a lot of white background, which makes it easier for the reader to take in the details of the illustrations. Some of the pages have multiple illustrations, which makes it easier and more fun for the reader to follow the direction of the story.

This book was about a knowledgable police officer, Officer Buckle, in Napville. As his duty, he visits Napville school and shares all of his safety tips to the students, however, no one pays attention and all sleep. When Officer Buckle brought along the police department's newly recruited dog, Gloria, everything began to change. As Officer Buckle, shared his safety tips once again, the children began to pay attention as Gloria was mimicking Officer Buckle from behind, but, when Officer Buckle checked behind him, Gloria sat, behaving well. When the students cheered and paid attention, Officer Buckle was surprised and happy and there were no accidents ever since this visit. At the police department, Officer Buckle received many thank-you letters and after that, he continued to visit many other schools sharing his safety tips with Gloria. But one day, Officer Buckle watched his safety tips speech on television and noticed everything and got furious and refused to deliver any more speeches, leaving Gloria alone on stage, bringing him back to square one with tragic accidents occurring left and right. After the tragic accidents, Officer Buckle received letters from the students involved in the accident and he realized that he always needs his buddy, Gloria.

This is one of my favorite books from my childhood. It lets you know of some safety tips that we should be aware of as well as making it interesting for dog lovers, like myself. This book included various lessons that caught my eye. Lessons like, you can't always achieve things alone and various safety tips in the background of the illustrations. This was always my go-to book as a child due to the interesting illustrations and the heartfelt meaning at the end where the 101st safety tip is to always stick with your buddy. It shows that no one is ever alone and there are always people by your side that are there for you. When trouble happens, you can realize the good or make things better with the help of your peer. Overall, I think this book is powerful for a children's book.

Officer Buckle gave very boring presentations to elementary schools, until he met Gloria the dog. Gloria added a certain zest that was missing from his presentations previously. She was able to keep the children engaged while Buckle gave his safety tips; now the kids would actually listen.

The story shows readers that teamwork makes a dream work. Before Buckle and Gloria were a team, Buckle was just a police officer giving futile safety talks at elementary schools and Gloria was just a dog. But when the two came together, they were able to entertain the audience while still providing an important message about safety. When Buckle lets Gloria go to the school alone, she fails to do either. This shows the importance of teamwork and working together.

Another important message in the book is what you say is important and that just one person can make a difference. In the story, Claire - a character known only through the star-shaped letters - sends Buckle a letter after he learns about Gloria's talents. Buckle was discouraged when he learned that the audience was more captivated by Gloria's display of tricks rather than him reading safety tips. However, Claire's letter cheered Buckle up and inspired him to go back to the school after he had thought that people only cared about the dog. This shows that your words are important, no matter how old you are; you can make a difference in someone's life.

The story also tells kids to not devalue themselves just because someone else gets more attention. As stated earlier, Buckle was demoralized after he realized that the kids cared more about Gloria. Buckle didn't value himself and as a result he almost lost his passion. The kids needed Buckle AND Gloria, not just one. Buckle is equally as important as his canine counter-part. The book shows kids to not be upset if the popular kid gets more attention than them, which is a very important message to send kids.

Who would of thought that the dog, Gloria, would be a dog who loves to put on a show, like she did. She was used to help Officer Buckle, who is so passionate about safety and sharing those safety rules to young children in all the schools in his district that Gloria just wanted to help "emphasis" some of these rules with some antics making the audience laugh in their seats. Regardless of the quickly, rising popularity of Gloria, both Gloria and Officer Buckler realized the true meaning of teamwork. This is book does teach about some safety rules but also focuses the importance of team work to help accomplish the main goal, which in this case was teaching safety to young children.

CREATIVE EXPERIENCE:
I would introduce safety week with help from a puppet, like a dog named "MacGruff" and we, as a team, would teach on safety rules the children could remember to use when they are at home on one day. Another day, we would teach safety rules for while they are playing at a park or outside their home, and on another day, safety rules to use while in the classroom. MacGruff, the dog and I would outline some of the safety rules and teach on its importance and use a child in our examples, as visual aid to go over the right and wrong ways of doing these safety rules. I would also ask the children to come up with some of their own safety rules for each category, to add. In the end, I would have each child create their own "SAFETY" book, with pictures, drawings regarding the safety rules they learned.

Officer Buckle is a safety connoisseur. He constantly thinks of everything that you shouldn’t do if you want to be safe. Officer Buckle goes to the school where the children are bored out of their minds by his safety speech. Then one day Officer Buckle gets a new k-9 companion, Gloria. When Gloria starts to go with Officer Buckle to talk with students, the students finally begin to show interest in Officer Buckles speech to the point where they laugh until crying. Officer Buckle becomes very popular, and without knowing of Gloria's tricks behind him, he is busy beyond belief with all the success from presenting his safety tips. The friendship that develops between Officer Buckle and Gloria leads to them becoming a pair that is inseparable throughout the book. Then one day, Officer Buckle figures out that the only reason he has become popular is Gloria, and is left to believe people still did not care about his safety tips. This hurts him and is no longer Gloria’s partner; but he misses her.

The lines in the illustration are thin, but they clearly depict the pictures in the story for the reader to easily follow. The shapes in the illustrations are light and unusual and bring the "silly" sense of the story out. The colors are full spectrum and fully keep the attention of the reader. The illustrations are paintings of water color that can be distinguished by the different shades and blending of colors.

Office Buckle & Gloria is a cute children's book I've never seen before. It is about a very safe police officer. Through his life experiences he takes notes of things and creates "safety tips". After collecting a large amount of safety tips he then begins to go school to school talking about his safety tips. The kids at these schools never cared or paid attention to Officer Buckle and his tips. They sometimes even fell asleep during his tips. One day Officer Buckle get a new dog named Gloria. He takes Gloria with him the next time he talks about his tips and it is a huge hit. But what he does not know is that the reason his tips/show is becoming more and more popular is because of Gloria and not him and he finally discovers this while watching the news.

I also liked the illustrations of this book. I thought they did a great job telling the story. The illustrations were either free form with no boards or no ending. It could be some wavy grass that Officer Buckle and Gloria are standing on with nothing but a white background. At other times it was a picture within a comic style boarder but certain aspects of the picture went past the boarder creating a 3D affect. The text filled where the white spots on pages were very smooth and with flow. Overall the illustrations from this book complimented the text creating a good story.

An officer on a mission to share his million safety tips with kids around the schools. But no one would listen until officer buckle brought along his friendly k-9 friend Gloria. Gloria turned the pages with silly acts as officer buckle shared his safety tips, they became a hit and after that his tips were heard.
Officer Buckle is a silly children’s book with lots of vibrant pictures very well illustrated. The author used watercolor and painting to depict each page with a story in it, the characters all showing expression and reactions to the stories funny lines. The illustrations in these books where left with a lot of blank space around the very vibrant illustrations but it worked because it allowed the eyes to catch the picture and still be able to read the words. The illustrations also showed great use of flow the pages worked one after another without leaving too big of a blank. I also liked how a lot of the illustrations used a pop out scheme, having the main picture be placed on the page but sometimes a object coming from the picture illustrated, looking like its coming out, or the use of postmodern design when there were parts of the illustration on another section of the page that added to the detail of the story. Overall this book as very well done with picture that can tell the story without any words, and that is what children’s books are all about.

Officer Buckle is a stickler for safety. He worries aout everything that you shouldn’t do. When he comes up with a safety tip he writes it down and then shares it with people. In the book, we see him go to the school where the children are bored out of their minds. Then one day Officer Buckle gets Gloria; his new partner. When Gloria starts to go with Officer Buckle to talk with students, they are fascinated by his presentation. Officer Buckle becomes very popular; he is busy beyond belief with presenting his safety tips. He had no idea that Gloria was behind him performing tricks: standing on her head, sitting up straight, doing flips. This story is all about the friendship that develops between Officer Buckle and Gloria. They become a pair that is inseparable throughout the book. Then one day, Officer Buckle figures out that the only reason he has become popular is Gloria; that people still did not care about his safety tips. This hurts him and is no longer Gloria’s partner; but he misses her. This story teaches the importance of friendship, companionship, and what it means to be a good friend.

Summary:
This book is about Officer Buckle and his sidekick Gloria. At the beginning of the book, Officer Buckle goes to speak about school safety, but everyone falls asleep. However, once Gloria is taken with him to safety speeches, all the students are enthralled. Officer Buckle has no idea that Gloria has been acting out behind him until he watches the news of a videoed speech earlier that day. Officer Buckle becomes upset and decides he is finished with speeches, but when Gloria goes by herself the entire audience falls asleep, and so does she! A big accident happens at the school, and Officer Buckle receives multiple letters to remind him that Gloria and himself are best when they are together.

Evaluation:
I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because the plot was very engaging for the reader. I definitely think students would enjoy reading this book and the events that occur in the book are very comical for readers.

Teaching Point:
I think this book would be good to use for a lesson involving friendship for lower grades at morning meeting time. The teacher could read the book to the whole class, and students could determine the theme or overall message of the book.

I absolutely loved reading this book because the illustrations did a fantastic job of showing what was actually happening during the safety speeches. Although the text did not mention what Gloria the dog was doing behind Officer Buckle while he told his safety tips, it showed everything she was doing! While the text told us how the children laughed during the speech, the pictures showed us how the Officer had no idea what was going on behind him, providing a silly image. Without the pictures of Gloria doing the tricks the book wouldn't really make sense at all because why would the children be hooting and hollering at Officer Buckle’s safety tips unless something funny was going on behind him? I loved how the text and the pictures shared a dual purpose in telling the story and I believe this book definitely deserved the Caldecott award. I would recommend using this book in a kindergarten to second grade classroom because it teaches a few safety tips while also providing a comedic story about a dog with a sense of humor.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I thought that these cartoon, watercolor illustrations perfectly fit this childish, spunky story. The vibrant colors used really brought forth excitement and was befitting for this children’s book. The illustrations offered a different viewpoint than the text used; the text offered the view of Officer Buckle, while the illustrations offered the view of what the students saw. While the students were watching Officer Buckle and Gloria on stage, they could see how Gloria acted out the different rules. Officer Buckle, however, was totally oblivious to what Gloria was doing behind him. As you read the book, you can notice that more and more of the students are wearing the badge of a crossed out banana peel. This is the same badge Officer Buckle wears on his right arm. This symbolizes how Officer Buckle’s rules are becoming more popular and familiar to the students throughout the story because of Gloria. I thought that this story was a neat way to introduce students to safety rules and the importance of them.

Officer Buckle is a police officer that presents safety tips to local school children. His presentations are boring and put the students to sleep. The students and staff do not pay attention to his safety tips. One day, the police department decides to get a police dog named Gloria. During Officer Buckle’s safety talks, Gloria begins acting out the safety tips behind Office Buckle. The presentation becomes a hit and Officer Buckle is asked to do safety presentations at other schools. The students and staff also begin to listen to and follow his safety tips. Officer Buckle ends up quitting his presentations when he finds out that Gloria is the real “star.”

Officer Buckle has amazing illustrations, and Gloria is hilarious! The illustrations show Gloria’s antics, rather than the words. The illustrations do not stick to a solid picture, but sometimes hang off the edges of the pictures in a unique illustrative style. Sometimes the pictures leap off the pages or dangle off an edge. Overall this was a very unique and entertaining story.
