Spring 2003 100 Word Writing Contest 1st Place Winner Grasping the lipstick case tightly, I moved to the mirror. Slowly unscrewing the colorful stick from its tubular home, I began to feather the pink onto my puckered lips. With just a few strokes my lips looked like the models’ on TV, or so I thought in my adolescent naiveté. Walking with new confidence, I descended the stairs where my father waited to drive me to the dance. Seeing my freshly painted smile, he handed me a Kleenex and without explanation said "Wipe it off."
2nd Place Winner Two-Step "How many women would do the things I do for you?" She rubbed his sore feet as they sat on their porch steps and watched the male fireflies dance for mates in the hot summer air. He laughed, knowing he'd be lost without her. Years later, he sits by the metal bed and tucks the edges of the blanket under her flaccid thighs. The TV blares "Top Hat." For the first time in their life together, she stares at him without recognition. He strokes her hair and watches the blinking lights on the monitor while Fred and Ginger spin. |
