Dear Gotham,

When I joined your Fiction I class in 2007, I was a copywriter in Malaysia with wishful dreams of writing a novel. I had never studied creative writing before (we didn’t really do that sort of thing at school) and at university I did a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting and Finance.

That Gotham class was my first taste of creative writing as a subject and I would like to thank you and my teacher, Season Harper Fox, for giving me such a great introduction.

It’s taken me a long time to get where I am—but in between life, work, migrating to Australia, and three children, I have just published my first novel, Katie Goes To KL, with Penguin Random House Southeast Asia in March 2024. It is about 16-year-old Katie Chen, an Asian Australian who goes back to Malaysia and embarks on a quest to reconnect with her mother.

Thank you, Gotham, for being there for me at the start. I feel that the world has gotten smaller since we met. Perhaps my stories will cross paths with you one day. I hope that you continue changing the lives of hopeful writers across the globe, wherever they may be.

Your sincerely,

Su-May Tan
